Week in review and class Wed/Thurs

What we have done in the last week:
1. Read Beowulf - up to lines 2300 (for Tuesday 2/24)
2. Quizzes: Introduction and first 1900 lines.
3. Notes on Introduction to Anglo Saxon Britain
4. Notes and reading on Archetypal structure/characters
5. Notes on Epic structure, Epic style, Epic poetry, and Epic hero.


Due WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY (2/25, 2/26)

In your notes, you need to apply the elements of the epic structure/poetry/hero to Beowulf. You need to find specific examples in the text to support these archetypes. Remember, these structural techniques are your paths into analysis and looking deeper into textual meaning.

1. Read the introduction to Beowulf. Put that copy into a BINDER!! Do not get it all schmacky! Be ready for a quiz on the introduction on Tuesday. I may ask a few questions on literary theory: Formalism and a few introduction questions on Archetypal School.

Due: Wednesday, February 11/12th

1. Go through the following quiz. Write down your initial answer on a piece of paper. Then write down the right answer (hopefully they coincide). Turn this in on Thursday.

2. Do a Formalist reading of the five Black History Month poems from class. Construct a THESIS from your literary analysis/formalist analysis for each poem. Do your best!

Class today: February 3rd

1. Turn in 3 writing responses at the beginning of the hour when the sub collects them.
2. Open the Literary Theory PowerPoint. Take notes through FORMALISM QUESTIONS (slide 14).
3. Mr. Hume will be coming in during the last 10 minutes to have to take a LMC survey.

Homework: Get ready for your terms test on Friday.
